Where to dine

In the last hundred years, cuisine from around the world migrated to Hawaii's Big Island. Starting with the Polynesians and flavored by an endless march of immigrants from Japan, China, the Philippines, Korea, and mainland U.S. and Europe. The result is called “Hawaii Regional Cuisine" and it reflects the best of those places -- combined with the freshest locally-grown, and often exotic, ingredients of Hawaii. Of course, this includes exceptional fresh-caught ocean fish like ahi, mahi-mahi, onaga, ono, opakapaka, and opah. On-site Kona Bali Kai has the highly rated "Da Poke Shack" for authentic Hawaiian cuisine.

If you're looking for the "catch of the day," the variety of beautifully-prepared fresh fish at Big Island restaurants will amaze you, but so will the Island-raised beef and lamb. If you want to sink your teeth into really meaty Big Island dining, Paniolo Country Inn serves up just about every kind of steak you can imagine. If you’re staying at the Kona Reef or Kona Bali Kai, there’s an array of Big Island dining options from fine dining to family restaurants -- some serving up sunsets on the water’s edge. For “local-style” dishes, like chicken katsu or pork chops, give Big Island Grill a go. Looking for local-style in Hilo? Check out Queen's Court Dining Room in the lobby of Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. You'll feel right at home. Try Café 100, or any of the great local mom and pop restaurants in historic Hilo Town. Or for an old-fashioned steak and seafood experience, head to Harrington’s on Reed’s Bay. It’s one of the prettiest and tastiest locations in Hilo. (And be sure to try the sweet potato haupia pie and other bakery treats right there at your hotel.) On the way to or back from viewing the volcano, stop at the Kiawe Kitchen off Hwy. 11, Volcano Village exit for fresh salads and mouth-watering wood fired oven pizzas. With many excellent reviews, Kiawe Kitchen is well-worth the 30 minutes drive from the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. Wherever you eat, ask for some savory gourmet coffee, grown on the Big Island.
